African American Donor Advisory Council While African Americans currently make up roughly half of the regions population, only 19% of Lifeblood’s donations come from this important segment of our community. In an effort to increase that total, Lifeblood has established partnerships with faith-based institutions, community councils and civic leadership. We have also established an advisory council made up of the following members: The Honorable Harold Collins, Memphis City Council Through these efforts, African American donations are already up 5% and growing. |
High School Scholarship Program
Through Lifeblood’s partnership with area high schools, students have an opportunity to explore and learn about one of the most valuable gifts any individual can give: blood for patients in need. High school blood donors frequently become blood donors for life, having learned early on the lesson of altruism in its highest form.In recognition of this important next step in students’ lives, Lifeblood supports a high school scholarship program available to schools that sponsor blood drives either by hosting an event on campus or by sponsoring an event at a Lifeblood donor center.
Each school sets an annual collections goal. If the school reaches its goal, then Lifeblood will grant $500 to the school to be used as scholarship funds. If the school exceeds this goal by 20%, then Lifeblood will grant $1,000 in scholarship funds. Students, faculty and parents can all participate either at the school-hosted mobile drives or in Lifeblood donor centers. Family & Friends Through the Family & Friends Blood Plan, recipients of blood transfusions can help ensure a stable blood supply in the Memphis area by organizing and asking family and friends to donate blood on their behalf. Our blood donor advocates assist recipients and provide promotional materials in order to make their efforts successful. Circle of Life A typical transplant surgery requires anywhere from 20 to 100 units of blood. With blood supplies here in the Mid-South frequently at dangerously low levels, a single transplant surgery could put a severe strain on local resources and create a genuine health crisis. That is why Lifeblood, in conjunction with The University of Tennessee Health Science Center and the Methodist University Hospital Transplant Institute, has created the Circle of Life Program. Circle of Life helps transplant recipients to encourage key people in their circle of family and friends to donate blood on their behalf – ensuring that the community blood supply can handle the increased demand created by their surgery.
