Bar-Kays and Friends Blood Drive September 15

Monday, August 29th, 2016

The Bar-Kays are hosting their third annual “Bar-Kays and Friends” blood drive with Lifeblood on Thursday, September 15 between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. at the National Civil Rights Museum. The American soul and R&B group is encouraging leaders and those in the music community to give back by donating blood.

Helen and Larry

“After hearing stories about local patients that need blood to live, we wanted to volunteer our time and blood for our community,” said James Alexander and Larry Dodson, Sr. of the Bar-Kays. “We’re challenging all of the local musicians and our fans to donate blood on September 15 at the Lifeblood drive.”

Boo Mitchell, Sweet Angel, Sir Charles Jones and many others from the Memphis music community are also supporting the blood drive efforts. Members of the Bar-Kays and other musicians will sign autographs and pose for pictures with blood donors at the blood drive.

September is also National Sickle Cell Awareness Month and Memphis has the second highest population of adult sickle cell patients in the United States. Because of complications of the disease, patients with sickle cell disease can require up to four units of blood per month for life.

Sickle Cell disease predominately affects the African-American community and research shows that blood donors with the same ethnic background provide the best match to those with the disease.

Successful donors will receive a Lifeblood T-shirt and refreshments after their blood donation. Donors who wish to make an appointment to donate may call 1-888-LIFEBLOOD or visit www.clublifeblood.org. Blood donations will also be accepted at any of Lifeblood five neighborhood donor centers. Between April 1 and Mother’s Day (May 8), Lifeblood donors will receive a shirt supporting two causes: giving blood for patients in our community and supporting women who receive transfusions as part of their treatment, including those with breast cancer. This is the sixth consecutive year Lifeblood has been recognized by the Breast Cancer Eradication Initiative for its efforts in raising awareness about the need for blood for breast cancer patients. Cancer patients often require many units of blood and platelet products during their treatments. Making sure there is a safe and stable blood supply available for local hospitals is vital to providing the best treatment resources for those that live in the Mid-South.

Find the Hero in You

320x50_LB_Hero

This year, Lifeblood is kicking off a new pledge campaign to encourage even more mid-southerners to help local patients in 2016. Blood donors are the secret superheroes in our community. In 2016 Lifeblood is asking more volunteers to Find the Hero in You by making a pledge to donate blood.

Individuals may pledge to donate by filling out a simple form on the Lifeblood website, Lifeblood.org. Donors who pledge will receive special communications, recognition and opportunities to share news of their good deeds through special images, stickers and t-shirts.

Whole blood can be donated every 56 days and platelets every seven days. Those who pledge will receive reminders and helpful information during the year to keep them on track to reach their goal.

Last year 27,839 local individuals donated approximately 42,000 units of red cells, platelets and plasma for patient transfusion. More than 63% of Lifeblood donors gave only one time.

If every blood donor gave just three times during the year, Lifeblood could maintain a stable blood supply for patients and reduce the need to import blood from other communities.

Find the Hero in You – Pledge to Donate in 2016

Monday, February 8th, 2016

This year, Lifeblood is kicking off a new pledge campaign to encourage even more mid-southerners to help local patients in 2016.

“Blood donors are the secret superheroes in our community,” said Jennifer Balink Lifeblood’s vice president of donor relations. “In 2016 we’re asking more volunteers to step up to the challenge, to ‘Find the Hero in You’ by making a pledge to donate blood.”

“If every blood donor gave just three times during the year, we could maintain a stable blood supply for patients and reduce the need to import blood from other communities,” Balink added.

Giving blood takes less than an hour and each donation can help up to three patients. Donors must weigh at least 115 pounds, be at least 17 years old (16 with a parent’s signed consent) and generally healthy.
