April-Cancer-awareness-logo

Between April 1 and Mother’s Day (May 8), Lifeblood donors will receive a shirt supporting two causes: giving blood for patients in our community and supporting women who receive transfusions as part of their treatment, including those with breast cancer. This is the sixth consecutive year Lifeblood has been recognized by the Breast Cancer Eradication Initiative for its efforts in raising awareness about the need for blood for breast cancer patients. Cancer patients often require many units of blood and platelet products during their treatments. Making sure there is a safe and stable blood supply available for local hospitals is vital to providing the best treatment resources for those that live in the Mid-South.

Find the Hero in You

320x50_LB_Hero

This year, Lifeblood is kicking off a new pledge campaign to encourage even more mid-southerners to help local patients in 2016. Blood donors are the secret superheroes in our community. In 2016 Lifeblood is asking more volunteers to Find the Hero in You by making a pledge to donate blood.

Individuals may pledge to donate by filling out a simple form on the Lifeblood website, Lifeblood.org. Donors who pledge will receive special communications, recognition and opportunities to share news of their good deeds through special images, stickers and t-shirts.

Whole blood can be donated every 56 days and platelets every seven days. Those who pledge will receive reminders and helpful information during the year to keep them on track to reach their goal.

Last year 27,839 local individuals donated approximately 42,000 units of red cells, platelets and plasma for patient transfusion. More than 63% of Lifeblood donors gave only one time.

If every blood donor gave just three times during the year, Lifeblood could maintain a stable blood supply for patients and reduce the need to import blood from other communities.

National Blood Donor Month

IMG_3494   IMG_3558

Joshuau Houston with Carolyn Cotten

Did you know that January is National Blood Donor month? We would like to thank everyone that donates with Lifeblood! Whether you donate whole blood six times a year, give platelets every other week, or organize blood drives at your workplace, you are giving the gift of life to patients in local hospitals.

We face many obstacles collecting blood during the month of January, such as increased cold and flu symptoms and busy post-holiday schedules. Not only that, but historically the Mid-South has experienced snow and ice during this month. These weather conditions can lead to an increased number of accidents, making the need for blood even greater.

On behalf of local patients and their families, we appreciate you making time in your schedule to donate life-saving products and look forward to seeing you in 2016.

Don’t forget: when you donate throughout the year take a picture and tag Lifeblood on social media!

Bears for Le Bonheur

IMG_9132 IMG_9150 IMG_9161_cropped IMG_9166_cropped

Lifeblood’s third annual “Bears for Le Bonheur” concluded Wednesday, December 16 when 1,000 stuffed animals were delivered to to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital just in time for the holidays.  Because of a generous grant from AutoZone and blood and platelet donations made by Lifeblood’s donors, a little extra comfort was given Le Bonheur patients this year.

More than 3,000 bears have been donated to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital since Lifeblood’s Bears for Le Bonheur program began in 2013.

The blood supply typically decreases in the winter months when there are increased chances of winter weather and donors are busy with the holidays. However, local hospitals need blood all year long.

Bears for Le Bonheur helps not only bring comfort to a sick child in the hospital but also provides local patients with a stable blood supply this holiday season.

Thank you to everyone who participated in Bears for Le Bonheur this year by donating blood, platelets or volunteering!

Holiday Hours

The holidays are a very busy time of year. Friends and family coming to visit, cooking, shopping and many more chores to do in a short amount of time. Because of all of these reasons it’s easy to forget to give blood, but this year we’re asking you to spare just one hour to give the gift of life.

12/25 – All donor centers closed

Donor Story

All-Star Donor Richard Davenport

All-Star Donor Richard Davenport has donated more than six gallons with Lifeblood during the last six years and more than 15 gallons during the last 25 years. Richard started donating blood because he felt the need and wanted to help people. He has donated every type of blood product that is needed: whole blood, double reds, platelets, plasma and red blood cells.

For the last three years, he has been donating platelets because he is CMV negative and his donations can be transfused to infant patients. (see article: http://www.lifeblood.org/pdfs/WhatisCMVforweb.pdf) In fact, he has had friends and family members who were cancer patients and needed platelets, so he knows their importance.

He says blood donation is “the easiest way to save a life” and when one gives platelets they are donating to the most vulnerable: cancer patients, stem cell and organ recipients, trauma and open-heart surgery patients. Lifeblood currently only collects about 40-perfect of the blood that is transfused annually, relying on community blood centers around the country to supply blood. Because of this, Richard encourages everyone to donate more often and help Lifeblood supply Memphis 100 percent of its blood.

On October 1, 2015 Lifeblood will join Blood Systems, one of the nation’s oldest, largest and most respected non-profit transfusion medicine organizations.

Lifeblood will continue to operate as Lifeblood – same name, same friendly staff, same sign-up process, same snacks and t-shirts. Lifeblood’s expanded relationship with Blood Systems will provide enhanced capabilities for advancing transfusion medicine while also maintaining efficiencies.

We appreciate the trust you’ve placed in us, and we look forward to continuing our mission of engaging volunteer donors and providing a safe blood supply for patients.

Donor Story

Dorothy Love

All-Star Donor Dorothy Love has a passion for helping others. Love recently received her 20 gallon marker and has been donating for thirty years.

Whenever she donates she remembers “someone can always benefit from my donation and I have life because of blood and I feel that I can share that part of life with others”.

Love encourages others to donate blood because hospitals count on blood donations and without blood donors a lot of people wouldn’t survive. She chose to donate with Lifeblood because of the staff. She believes they take care of the donors. What would she say to someone who’s nervous about donating? “Have no fear; your gift of life is truly needed.”

Your Blood Drive at Our Place

Instead, consider sponsoring your blood drive at your nearest Lifeblood donor center.

Recipient Story

IMG_6459

Jax McCulley was born in August 2014. There were
complications after his birth that required him to receive blood, and sadly he passed away a week after he was born.

To celebrate the memory of Jax McCulley’s first birthday, the McCulley family stopped by the Bartlett donor center to give blood. They also encouraged their friends and family to roll up their sleeves and pay it forward by donating with Lifeblood.

Why are platelets important?

platelets

The function of platelets is to stop bleeding by clumping and clotting blood.

Platelets have a shelf life of only 5 days, meaning the need is constant.

Donors can give platelets every 7 days, up to 24 times per year.

Platelets are often used to help burn victims and cancer patients.

Community Story

Loeb Properties

Tammy Brownlee and Sara Hoover are Loeb Properties employees as well as regular blood donors. Loeb Properties’ East Memphis office hosted a
blood drive Friday, June 5th for its employees and the public. Hoover and Brownlee coordinated the blood drive and are passionate about blood
donation because they have both had family members and friends who have needed blood.  Lifeblood’s mobile blood drive makes it easy for Loeb’s employees to give back to the community. “How can you say no when they’re at your doorstep”, said Hoover. Brownlee and Hoover
chose to host blood drives with Lifeblood because Lifeblood is the only local non-profit blood bank that serves the Memphis community, which fulfills Loeb’s mission to give back to the local community by “helping neighbors”.
