Blood centers nationwide seek more blood donors

September 2nd, 2016

September 4 – 10 declared National Blood Donation Week

To help boost the nation’s blood supply after a particularly challenging summer, September 4 – 10, 2016 has been established as National Blood Donation Week. New blood donors are needed every day to replace those who can no longer donate, however blood centers are seeing fewer people step forward to roll up their sleeves. Dr. Daliah Wachs, syndicated radio personality, and Lifeblood, the American Red Cross and blood banks across the country have teamed up to reverse the decline in new blood donors and to encourage active blood donors to continue donating on a regular basis.

Donors can make a convenient appointment to give blood at www.Lifeblood.org or by calling 1-888-LIFEBLOOD.

Blood donation takes about an hour from check-in to refreshments.

Volunteer blood donors must be at least 16, weigh a minimum of 115 pounds and be in good health.

For media inquiries, please contact Jennifer Gladstone at 901-529-6317 or Dr. Daliah Wachs at doctordaliah@hotmail.com or (702) 279-4123

Bar-Kays and Friends Blood Drive September 15

August 29th, 2016

The Bar-Kays are hosting their third annual “Bar-Kays and Friends” blood drive with Lifeblood on Thursday, September 15 between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. at the National Civil Rights Museum. The American soul and R&B group is encouraging leaders and those in the music community to give back by donating blood.

Helen and Larry

“After hearing stories about local patients that need blood to live, we wanted to volunteer our time and blood for our community,” said James Alexander and Larry Dodson, Sr. of the Bar-Kays. “We’re challenging all of the local musicians and our fans to donate blood on September 15 at the Lifeblood drive.”

Boo Mitchell, Sweet Angel, Sir Charles Jones and many others from the Memphis music community are also supporting the blood drive efforts. Members of the Bar-Kays and other musicians will sign autographs and pose for pictures with blood donors at the blood drive.

September is also National Sickle Cell Awareness Month and Memphis has the second highest population of adult sickle cell patients in the United States. Because of complications of the disease, patients with sickle cell disease can require up to four units of blood per month for life.
Nicole and Kris from Australia

Sickle Cell disease predominately affects the African-American community and research shows that blood donors with the same ethnic background provide the best match to those with the disease.

Successful donors will receive a Lifeblood T-shirt and refreshments after their blood donation. Donors who wish to make an appointment to donate may call 1-888-LIFEBLOOD or visit www.clublifeblood.org. Blood donations will also be accepted at any of Lifeblood five neighborhood donor centers. For a list of donor centers, visit www.Lifeblood.org.

Lifeblood announces EMERGENCY Appeal for all blood types

Lifeblood announces EMERGENCY Appeal for all blood types

Memphis, TN—Plummeting blood donations has forced Lifeblood to issue an emergency appeal for all blood types, especially all Rh negative types: A-negative, B-negative, AB-negative and O-negative.  Lifeblood is the community blood provider for the Mid-South and, as stewards of the community blood supply, maintaining an adequate supply of all blood types is imperative.  Reserves of blood are depleted to a less than one day supply on the shelves.  Since it takes 24 to 36 hours to test and process each donation before it can be released for a patient, blood is being transfused as fast as Lifeblood can provide it to hospitals.  Donors of all types are urgently needed to give blood now.  To schedule a blood donation online, go to www.Lifeblood.org or call Lifeblood at (901) 529-6320

“Due to a drop in blood donations, our community is critically low on all blood types and Lifeblood is asking all eligible donors to help stabilize the community blood supply and support local hospitals” said Danny Garrick, Executive Director of Lifeblood. “Blood donations from local donors are critically important for treating trauma victims, premature babies, cancer, and sickle cell disease. If you are eligible to donate, please give now!”

Donors with Rh negative blood types are asked to inquire with a Lifeblood staff member about doubling their impact by donating Double Red Cells.

Appointments are highly recommended.  Knowing how many to expect means we are better able to serve our donors.
